Yes!!!
Keith,
I'd thought about starting a thread in the Technology group on what constitutes a pseudo-cell. I'd planned to discuss the two possible perspectives on how a pseudo-cell could be interpreted -- Kraken cell vs. a member of a Subset in a single house/unit. Now, maybe it's best that I let it slide.
Your examples would have fallen into the Kraken cell (forcing chain) scenario.
BTW: does anyone have a link to a definition of pseudo-cell?
Regards, Danny |

I don't. I suppose the Type 3 UR would be the prototype.

The first use of the term "pseudo-cell" in these forums is in this thread:
http://www.dailysudoku.com/sudoku/forums/viewtopic.php?t=2736&highlight=pseudo*
So, Ted: Did you get the term somewhere else, or did you make it up here? It is remarkable that no one commented on the term. I liked it, and started using it immediately.
(By the way, I looked through the Sudoku Player's forum, and their first use of "pseudo-cell" was only a couple of weeks ago. This may not be data, for their archive was lost, and I do not know how much has been recovered.)

There's probably much more to it, but my simple, personal definition has been that a pseudo cell is two cells that function as a single cell. |

And I've been working under the (mis-)conception that it works like:
Sudopedia wrote: | Uniqueness Test 3
This test can be stated as follows:
Suppose both ceiling cells have extra candidates. By treating (the extra candidates in) these two cells as one node, find k - 1 other cells (as nodes) in the same house as these two cells so that the union of the candidates for these k cells has exactly k unique digits. Then the Naked Subset rule can be applied eliminate these k digits from the other cells in the house. A rectangle that meets this test is also called a Type 3 Unique Rectangle.

Now, I suspect that a pseudo-cell is more likely to act as a Kraken Cell (forcing chain) in a UR. |

The two cells with extra candidates in a Type 3UR have been for some time been known as a "quantum cell." |

Ron,
Has the term "quantum cell" been applied to other than a Type 3UR?
I searched for both sudoku quantum cell and sudoku pseudo-cell and did not find much.

The term "quantum" was used briefly by Steve Kurzhals as an adjective to more complex patterns, but otherwise usage has been only with Type 3 uniqueness tests AFAIK.
BTW MadOverlord's original term was "quantum square", not "quantum cell." |
