Not the most satisfying solution, but...
Doing an external analysis on the potential 23 DP in boxes 89, one of r1c6, r5c9 or r7c9 had to be=2. R5c9, r7c9<>2 due to invalidity. |

I squeezed in under 5 moves just - but only by using an als...
Quote: | kite(8) r5, c3 ; r9c7<>8
w-wing(28) ; (2=8)r5c7 - r7c7=r9c8 - (8=2)r9c3 ; r9c7<>2
kite(8) r8, c3 ; r6c6<>8
w-wing/als(48) (4=28)r9c43 - r9c8=r4c8 - (8=4)r4c6 ; r4c4<>4 |
There were a lot of turbot moves on 8! Someone more versed in the dark fish arts will probably find some monster franken thing...? |

Peter, no monster franken thing ..., but a Remotely Finned Swordfish on 8s ...
Code: | X-Loop on 8s : {r5c1=r5c7-r7c7=r7c4-r8c46=r8c1} => -8r469c7, -8r9c46, -8r46c1 |

JC, thanks! I am really rubbish at all those higher fish.
I did go back and find this one-stepper which might (?) be a kraken franken swordfish?! .. if not just an almost-x-chain! (Edit. As it's not a loop I guess it can't be a fish)
Code: | almost-fishy(8) ; r9c8<>8
x-chain(8) (8)r7c7=r7c4 - r89c6=r6c6 - r6c3=r9c3
||
(8)r4c6 - (4)r4c6=r9c6 - (4=258)r9c437 |

Your pattern can be viewed as a:
Code: | Franken Swordfish r578\c17b8 <> 8 r46c17,r9c467
|
No fin. However, an excellent example of the strong links in an X-Loop overlaying the base sectors of a fish.
Peter: I believe that the majority of "fish" patterns can't be expressed as loops. If r7c1 and r8c7 had contained an <8> as a candidate in this grid, then I'm fairly sure that an X-Loop isn't possible, but the Franken Swordfish would have still been viable:
Code: | Franken Swordfish r578\c17b8 <> 8 r46c17,r9c467
+-----------------------------------+
| * . . | . . . | * . . |
| * . . | . . . | * . . |
| * . . | . . . | * . . |
|-----------+-----------+-----------|
| ** . . | . . . | ** . . |
| X / / | / / / | X / / |
| ** . . | . . . | ** . . |
|-----------+-----------+-----------|
| X / / | X X X | X / / |
| X / / | X X X | X / / |
| * . . | ** * ** | ** . . |
+-----------------------------------+
(**) represent real eliminations in this grid, and
(* ) represent additional eliminations possible from fish pattern
