It's a fairly easy one-stepper.

Right, but how do you gauge degree of difficulty before starting?

I suspect our one-steppers are different.

R4c1=7 or r4c3=1 to kill the 29 DP. The 1 proves 7 in r5c7; pincers set r4c8, r5c1<>7. A Skyscraper on 9 does it too.

Code:

+------------+----------+-----------+
| 4   19 139 | 8 5   27 | 237 79 6  |
| 5   2  7   | 3 6   9  | 1   4  8  |
| 8   6  39  | 1 27  4  | 237 5  29 |
+------------+----------+-----------+
| 279 5  129 | 6 12  8  | 4   79 3  |
| 27  8  6   | 4 9   3  | 27  1  5  |
| 3   19 4   | 5 127 27 | 6   8  29 |
+------------+----------+-----------+
| 29  3  29  | 7 8   1  | 5   6  4  |
| 6   7  8   | 2 4   5  | 9   3  1  |
| 1   4  5   | 9 3   6  | 8   2  7  |
+------------+----------+-----------+

After basics:
Code:
+-------------+-------------+-------------+
| 4   19  139 | 8   5   27  | 237 79  6   |
| 5   2   7   | 3   6   9   | 1   4   8   |
| 8   6   39  | 1   27  4   | 237 5   29  |
+-------------+-------------+-------------+
| 279 5   129 | 6   12  8   | 4   79  3   |
| 27  8   6   | 4   9   3   | 27  1   5   |
| 3   19  4   | 5   127 27  | 6   8   29  |
+-------------+-------------+-------------+
| 29  3   29  | 7   8   1   | 5   6   4   |
| 6   7   8   | 2   4   5   | 9   3   1   |
| 1   4   5   | 9   3   6   | 8   2   7   |
+-------------+-------------+-------------+
The Skyscraper on 9 in C29 is a one-stepper.

Marty,

Sudoku Susser (SS) has a "solve" button (Shift+D) where it tells you what it takes to solve the puzzle. SS knows the regular wings and fish. It does not know skyscrapers, ERs, W, M wings, etc. If it does pick these up, they are just chains. But, SS knows all the basic and usual VH moves.

So, if I run the puzzle through SS, it will tell me if it is basic, VH, or more than VH. Without giving me more information that will spoil my fun when I solve the puzzle. For this week's puzzle, SS says:

1 x Simple Forcing Chains
1 x XY-Wing
1 x Intersection Removal
14 x Pinned Squares

My judgement says, Simple Forcing Chain is probably a skyscraper, this is probably a relatively easy puzzle.

I'll go back and post what SS says for past puzzles.
