The xy-wing 389 with pivot r2c5 forces r1c5<>3 which solves it.

UR r4 & r6, r6c9 = 4 also does the trick

That makes 3 VHs in a row that I've solved all by my lonesome. Very Happy

Is this the pattern to which you refer?

Yes. Not your garden-variety "rectangle," as the left-side squares share a box rather than a column, but the same logic applies ... unless my brain has turned to mush again. Smile

Hi, Orkamat, you're on the right track there, but garden-variety is the way to go with unique rectangles.

You need four cells that share two boxes, two rows and two columns.

There's no one here that has not made some variation of this mistake, so don't feel badly.

Let me add one thing, which may not be necessary. The idea behind Unique Rectangles is if all four cells were the same pair, 89 in this case, then the numbers could be interchanged and thus you'd have two solutions, whereas the puzzle is created to have one unique solution.

With the position of these four cells, the numbers could not be interchanged because invalidities would result.
