Keith, here's aran's "starting hypothesis": 24r2c9=17r2c79

How is that the equivalent of r2c9<>24?

If starting a chain with a strong link is a "guess" then we might as well throw in the towel and give up the game.

Well, aran him/herself said:

I believe that not 24 r2c9 is the equivalent of r2c9<>24

I still don't see it, but it doesn't matter. I asked if it was a guess, I did not characterize it as such.

In any event, I was trying to divine a reason to choose the starting point based on a uniqueness argument.

Best wishes,

Keith.

Keith, from what I've seen, aran spends most of his time (in other forums) tackling extremely difficult puzzles. As such, he's accustomed to finding sub-patterns, like the 17 pair in r2c79, and seeing if he can take advantage of it. Since cell r2c9 is the only cell in the puzzle with four candidates, I can see aran homing in on it like that mosquito did to me yesterday evening.

Bottom Line: I seriously doubt if he "guessed".

Regards, Danny

Livermore is where I worked before retiring. It's over a 1,000 ft. "hill" from where I live -- Tracy. Most of the free-flowing water in CA goes through "The Delta" just a few miles north of here on its way to the San Francisco/Bay Area and out to the ocean. Unfortunately, way too many mosquitos are on this side of the hill. They spray the entire county most years from the air.

That sounds like a bad idea. We encourage the bats.

Haha, that cracked me up.

Good local knowledge from a Detroit guy on his way to Great Britain. You must really get around!

(In response to keith's post below : for some reason, the system won't seem to accept placing the quote first)

Putting an AIC into words inevitably obliges to resort to something along the lines of
- not a implies b
- if a is false then b is true
or using other symbols
~a=>b.
An AIC could - perhaps a lttle unfairly - be described as a guess which ends up as a truth.
After all, the starting point is based on something, and since the future truth remains to be established, what is that basis ? Guess, educated guess, hunch, intuition, promising looking position, interesting start, experiment, a touch of the unexpected...there are many contenders.

daj : thanks for the comment Very Happy I'll send you a mosquito net.

Side note to aran and others that encounter posting issues:

When the PHP software behaves squirrelly, checking the box "Disable HTML in this post" will often resolve the issue.
