In the diagram the 5 in r8c7 can be removed because of the
X wing leaving a type something or other UR on 34 which
sets r8c7 to 3. But even this doesn't seem to set it- it still
needs the XYZ. This was a complicated VH- but I thought it
was strangely unsatisfying... |

Two additional deletions are available in the posted grid due to "locked candidates" conditions: r1c8<>1 & r6c5<>2.
Code: | *-----------------------------------------------------------*
| 9 17 6 | 47 3 2 | 145 45 8 |
| 8 4 3 | 5 9 1 | 7 26 26 |
| 2 17 5 | 467 46 8 | 134 9 34 |
|-------------------+-------------------+-------------------|
| 6 d25 279 | 3 e24 f47 | 59 8 1 |
| 45 8 247 | 9 1 g67 |h46 3 245 |
| 1 3 249 | 8 26 5 | 469 24 7 |
|-------------------+-------------------+-------------------|
| 7 9 8 | 146 5 3 | 2 146 46 |
|a45 6 1 | 2 8 9 | 345 7 345 |
| 3 c25 b24 | 146 7 46 | 8 1456 9 |
*-----------------------------------------------------------* |
The first of these two deletions opens a w-wing(45)r1c8|r8c1 with SL (5)r9c28. However, this does not result in any direct deletions but transporting (4)r8c1, marked a thru h, does the deed.
If r8c1=4, then r9c3=2, then r9c2<>2, then r4c2=2, then r4c5=4, then r4c6=7, then r5c6=6, then r5c7=4. Now the two pincers in r1c8 & r5c7 give r13c7,r6c8<>4 to complete the puzzle.
I do not know if the pincer transport I used is considered a VH move, but hopefully it is acceptable to some folks........

Actually the x-wing on 5 in col 19 mentioned by George Woods above solves it. No other moves needed. |

I used the X-Wing and XYZ-Wing. I've done it twice and needed the 2nd step. |

I solved it the same way without using XY pivoted at r4c2 .
But I can't deduce that r5c6=7 as the system "Hint" showed. |

I don't know how the hints work, but after the XYZ-Wing, r5c7=6, so r5c6 has to be 7. Don't know if that makes any sense. |

The "Hint" shows r5c6=7 just after the X-Wing (r8c2=6) and before deducing r5c7=6. |

OK, looking at Ted's grid, it's based on the XY-Wing 246 pivoted in r6c8. |
