As far I can see from daily sudoko and other media there is only one producer who supply real difficult puzzles. Menneske, impossible. However as he delivers randomly it is hard to to see how many of this kind he has, and sometimes I receive a puzzles I already solved. Anybody who knows how to open all of them? More hints of very difficult puzzles? |

Hi Oaxen,
If you are looking for some more difficult Sudoku puzzles then there are plenty of free programs available on the net which will generate them. The one I use is Hodoku which can be downloaded from the link below. The level of difficulty can be chosen by the user - if you try "hard" you will get a puzzle with a similar difficulty level as most of the Menneskes posted on this board. The more difficult levels are very tough indeed.

"Real difficult", like beauty, is in the eye of the beholder. Most sites, including Menneske, offer a variety of levels of difficulty. A site that I use a lot is Vanhegan. Their Fiendish can be challenging and their Extreme often live up to the name.

Oaxen,
Other forums than this one have had threads on "the most difficult sudoku puzzles".
There is even a file of extremely difficult puzzles used to test sudoku solvers.
I don't recall ever getting the same random Menneske twice, but the odds of doing so are certainly better than the odds of winning the lottery!

a site that I rarely see referenced is
"krazydad sudoku" just google it.
he has 1000's of puzzles in like 5 or 6 different difficulty levels
his highets difficulty level has probably the widest range of extreme type puzzles. some of which would give any solver a run for their money, let alone being able to understand the techniques to solve them.
the issue with krazydad's site is he does not provide a way to easily copy them. so you are left with transfering the puzzle by hand.
his easiest puzzles are great for printing out for pencil paper. |

Have you suggested that he make his puzzles available as an 81-character string? Not for mass downloads, but so it can be cut & pasted into Nataraj' formatter or into Sudoku Susser.

yep, got his response too.
here it is

I'm happy to provide puzzles in text format to the sudoku community and academic researchers upon request. I have an undocumented API that returns both regular sudoku and killer sudoku puzzles in this JSON format.
