Marty,

The UR is there in your after basics grid: B8R8=6.

I don't know if that helps much, I am still working the puzzle. I have to fight with my wife for possession, since the LA Times crossword is on the same page of the newspaper.

The median for these Friday puzzles seems to be an obscure skyscraper. Some are easier, some are more difficult on the ugly side: No patterns, just chains.

When the Thursday and Sunday puzzles get difficult, it is usually a matter of an XY-wing.

After basics it's a Type 2 (unless I missed something) and I tried it to no avail. I'll take another look.
