x wing 7
xy wing 159
If I post too early it might look as if I've cheated the computer's midnight. But I'm near the early edge of the International Date Line and all I have to do is solve a puzzle in the wee hours. |

Forgive me- I get the same result and the x wing on 9 as quoted but can't find the 15 to make up a 159 xy wing. There is a kind of x wing 579 with pivot at r5c5 that leads to a 5 at r4c4 but for me no obvious continuation

The X-Wing takes out a 9 from r8c2, which then becomes the XY-Wing pivot. |

Thanks Marty -Just after posting my problem I realised I had serviced only half of the X wing. and of course correcting that gives a direct solution.
BUT is the kind of XY that Idescribed andlead to the 5 at r4c4 classified as an XY wing and if not how is it described? |

George,
I'm sorry, but I just don't know what combination of cells constitute what you're asking about. This is the grid after the X-Wing is executed.
Code: |
+--------------+-------------+-------------+
| 4579 59 4579 | 2 6 49 | 1 3 8 |
| 149 19 3 | 49 8 5 | 6 2 7 |
| 8 2 6 | 7 1 3 | 59 4 59 |
+--------------+-------------+-------------+
| 459 8 459 | 59 3 6 | 7 1 2 |
| 157 6 157 | 8 79 2 | 34 59 34 |
| 579 3 2 | 159 4 179 | 8 6 59 |
+--------------+-------------+-------------+
| 2 4 19 | 139 5 8 | 39 7 6 |
| 3 15 8 | 6 79 147 | 2 59 14 |
| 6 7 159 | 1349 2 149 | 3459 8 134 |

XY (nearly 597)
Take the pivot at r5c5 If 7 the pair of 15s in Block 4 denaies 5s to top row in that block OR if 9 then same row of block 4 is denied 5 ergo r4c4 is 5 |

George,
I am hardly an expert on such things, but that might be an XY-Wing with r5c13 being a pseudo cell, i.e., the two cells act as one 57 pincer. Then you would treat it as an XY-Wing=>r4c13<>5 rather than having to look at each value of r5c5.
If by any chance Keith sees this, he'll be able to give the final word. |
