By far the toughest puzzle to appear in our local paper. I often solve them without any pencil marks. But not this one!

I eventually got there with forcing chains. The first two chains I found- not "5" in r1c9 and not "2" in r4c5- each added two solved cells but no other deductions (that I could find!) simpler than a single "turbot fish" elimination. The third chain- not "3" in r8c8- broke it open.

Is there anything less cumbersome/more elegant than the chains?

Nothing i could see. This is a rather hard puzzle, that i certainly could not solve without pm's (but the expert for this is RW on another forum).

If pencil marks means filling in cells with their candidates, then I couldn't conceive of doing a puzzle without them.

After writing in the candidates and doing the basic stuff, there was a Finned X-Wing on "5" which eliminated one candidate, but I don't recall if that contributed to the solution.

Then, I guess I stumbled onto the right chain. Of the two possibilities for "6" in box 6, r4c8 led to a contradiction, and entering the "6" in r6c7 broke it wide open.

Ah, you haven't seen these puzzles. This one also received the toughest rating from "Janric Classic Sudoku".

This is far more representative of what get's their "Gold" rating. Only after I looked on-line did I realize that there WAS something to this Sudoku stuff. I'll have to look at Finned X-Wings next.
