I often find Hard puzzles more difficult than very hard (for obvious reasons) But I was stuck on this one and on leaving it and returning, I spotted the x wing that opened up the Xy wing stte
Only when I finished did I remember this is a hard not a VH - so I felt as if I had cheated. Did anyone else do it my way? |

I don't play the Hards regularly, but I just tried this one on Draw/PLay and it seems more difficult than a Hard should be. I was under the impression that Hards could be completed via basics. I'm stuck on basics per the grid below.

Many VH fall out once the x or xy wing is spotted. Hards shouldn't need wings of any sort but demand basic techniques that can be far more difficult to spot than a familiar wing Hence I have felt often times VH to be less time consuming than Hard
Incidentally I give my "cheating" solution below
the x wing on 2s row 1 and 9 leads to the xy wing 179 pivoted at r8c8 |

I gave up on this hard after 45 minutes and used the hint button to discover the hidden pair 12 in column 7 rows 2 and 7 leading to r7c9=9 and the rest of solution fell out. Thanks George and Marty for posting that you struggled with this hard also.

| I always play the hard puzzles in hopes of finding the somewhat rare one that requires very challenging basics. This one is a classic example. I would say that this puzzle was more fun than 90 percent of the VHs on this site. Marty, I solved your grid, and after applying Georges X-wing on 2 located in c19, you are home free (after several hidden singles). |

| Kuskey, it looks like the X-wing is in r19 rather than c19.Were you able to do more basics on my grid before applying the X-Wing? |

| No Marty, I was not able to find additional basics in your grid. I guess most of us missed the hidden pair of 12, which solves the puzzle using basics only. They can be devilish to spot. |

I thought if you knew about a hidden pair that you could continue basics with my grid. I rarely talk about Hidden Pairs. Any hidden anything has a complementary subset, Which is usually easier to spot than a Hidden pair. In this case, the complementary subset is the quint 34569 in c7. Of course, that proved to be as elusive as the pair. |
