Hugh,
We both used the same 48-9 pivoted in r2c8; I didn't think the elimination would solve the puzzle so I used the transport, which I didn't check but which I assumed solved it. |

Hey Marty and Hugh, I always use just 'pure' wings when solving VH's on this site (only because I know it's possible) and I couldn't find a solution using just 'pure' wings without using 3 XY Wings! (All 3 of them were 489 XY wings!) Thanks, Don. |

Don, what are "pure" wings? That's not a term I'm familiar with. |

Hi Marty! A 'pure' wing is a wing that is defined in its basic (or 'purest') form. I didn't look closely at the solution that you provided but I saw that you used the term 'transport' which I assume (maybe wrongly ) is an extension of a 'pure' XY Wing. I've seen you and Keith in past discuss transports and if I'm remembering correctly, I think it added additional logic in order to extend the basic (or pure) Wing. Please correct me if I'm wrong! Thanks, Don. |

Don, I don't think using a transport is considered a standards move here.
I would strongly advise familiarizing yourself with and using transports, as it's extremely powerful.
A quick definition: start with pincers, however they became pincers, by any technique. If one of the pincers can prove the same value in another cell, the pincer is said to have been transported to that cell. The transported-to cell can now be used as a pincer in lieu of the transported-from cell. In this puzzle, the pincer 9 can be transported from r2c3 to r5c1. Or the one at r3c9 can be transported to r6c7. |

I'm with Don. The discussion of so many other techniques lately, though I suppose it's interesting to many, has me a little chagrined.
As for this puzzle, I also found 3 successive 489 XY wings but then realized only 2 of them are needed, as Hughwill listed. |
