It's the old pirate's favourite - "pincers of eight" at (a) r1c8 and (d) r7c7.
One of these must be true for 8 so r7c8 < > 8.

You can also look at position (a) at r1c8 and say what if it is 7 ?
The above chain shows you that if you say a = 7 then d = 8 and r7c8 < > 8
But another route also shows that if a = 7 then r9c8 = 4 and r7c8 DOES = 8.
This contradictory result shows that (a) can never be 7. |
