It's the old pirate's favourite - "pincers of eight" at (a) r1c8 and (d) r7c7.

One of these must be true for 8 so r7c8 < > 8.

Code:
+----------------+--------+-----------+
| 25   578  157  | 9 3 6  | 4  a78 12 |
| 6    89   19   | 2 7 4  | 189 5  3  |
| 2349 3479 3479 | 5 1 8  | b79 6  29 |
+----------------+--------+-----------+
| 1    2    59   | 7 8 59 | 6   3  4  |
| 7    59   6    | 3 4 59 | 2   1  8  |
| 34   34   8    | 6 2 1  | 5   9  7  |
+----------------+--------+-----------+
| 345  3457 3457 | 1 9 2  | d38 4-8 6 |
| 8    1    39   | 4 6 7  | c39 2  5  |
| 49   6    2    | 8 5 3  | 179 47 19 |
+----------------+--------+-----------+

You can also look at position (a) at r1c8 and say what if it is 7 ?

The above chain shows you that if you say a = 7 then d = 8 and r7c8 < > 8

But another route also shows that if a = 7 then r9c8 = 4 and r7c8 DOES = 8.

This contradictory result shows that (a) can never be 7.
