Wow I couldn't even get to the crunch point shown by JLO
BUT I noted that a 9 in r2c5 solves box 2 and from there the 2 and 9 in Box 8 create a 29 pair
bearing down impossibly on box9 so r7c8 has to be both 2 and 9.
so r2c5 must be 5 and hence we have a solution!
So I am going to be accused of using a forcing function or trial and error BUT I did spot it "in my head" and not via pencil! |

I see r1c1 and I see the X-Wing. The question is whether or
not there is any direct line of reasoning that allows you to place
a 4 at R6C1, opening another path to a solution. It just seems to
be hanging there begging to be picked off. |

For what it's worth, I just completed the puzzle and what broke it open for me was the strong links (skyscraper) on 9 in columns 4 and 9 which takes out the 9 from r1c8. |

Personally I found this a particularly easy one! Perhaps it's the way the cookie crumbles on a particular day. Anyway, following the basic eliminations, the X-wing on 5's presented itself without any searching (the first two 5's being easily spotted on the first row) and from there on plain sailing.

| I've bragged before that a couple of the very hard puzzles were easy - only to find I'd screwed up and got lucky. But this time I have to agree with sqd pete - this was an easy one. There seemed to be a plethora of easy to spot skyscrapers. Didn't have to look for any xy or xyz wings. Or maybe I did screw up and just got lucky again! |

Ok I solved it in an "Unofficial way", but trying to do it "properly" I cannot see how the 1 in Box 6 is deduced (OK I can do it by considering the effect of each 3 in box 6 - but that is again a forcing function)
so HELP!
Incidentally is it my computer or a change in the forum software?. I find that the sentences now seem to be on one line instead of "wrapping around", and that makes them hard to read and impossible to print in full! |

After initial straightforward eliminations, I was left with x wings on 6s in rows 6 & 9. That was the only "hard" level step. The rest was continued straightforward elimination. The 1 in box 6 ended up as part of a triple -
47, 17, 47.
Yes - the new format is awkward to read. |

George, I think the reason this thread is so hard to read is because there is one post that has an excessively long line that cannot easily be split as it has no spaces - this is the long string in your first post on this thread.
Once any line is too long to fit on a screen, all posts in a thread are displayed at the width of that long line.
If you edit your post in some way to split the string, display it in a smaller font, or remove it altogether this may put it right. I'm not absolutely sure this will work - I suppose it's possible that once a thread has been 'widened' it always stays that way, but it may be worth a try. |

| Quite so Angel - I have accidentally done it myself on occasion. The post that caused this thread (only) to elongate horizontally was probably jLo's original which seemed to have an inordinately long margin. Easily done ! |

Just maybe a technicality, but that's a naked pair, not a triple. |

I can't remember if jLo's post had that long margin originally or not. If so then you're probably right (sorry George!). I wasn't sure if the white boxes get stretched automatically to match the required width.
Either way it's only this thread that's affected. |

Darn, just when I get to the point where I think I am starting to understand, I get knocked down again. I cannot find a next move. I don't think I am at the point where I can find the mentioned xwings. And I can usually understand a skyscraper but can nev er find them myself. Can someone get me started again on this puzzle. Here is where I am:

Do some eliminations in column 8, followed by some eliminations in row 9,
followed by more eliminations in column 8. You end up with a naked pair
that solves r5c8. After that it is pretty clear sailinig to the X-Wing. |

There are a few things, but I don't know how far they take you.
1) In column 9, the 4s are limited to box 9, so other 4s in that box get eliminated.
2) That exposes a 35-25-23 XY-Wing based in r8c7.
3) There is a skyscraper on 9 in columns 4 and 8.
