Usually I can solve the Very Hards but sometimes I need to come here and get some help.
This time I was able to solve the puzzle very quickly without using any advanced techniques at all. I even went back and solved it again to make sure I didn't do any incorrect eliminations.
I went to the solver online and it still rates it as Very Hard but I don't know why. Did anyone else come to the same conclusion?
Thanks! |

I ran it through a different solver. It does not require any "advanced" techniques. I have yet to solve it by hand.

Me too. Nothing VH about this one. I wonder which advanced technique the solver program had to invoke? |

I went through the online solver and just doing simple eliminations it still stayed at Very Hard.
Then the nines have to be in the top row of the eighth box, so you can eliminiate the nines from the bottom two rows of this box. After that it leaves a single nine in one of the columns. After this it changed to Hard, then using simple eliminations it changed to easy.
It definitely doesn't require any advanced techniques to solve. |

Yes, it is too easy for a VH.
Seems most are too easy or too hard!
The Saturday (yesterday) puzzle (6 star) that is in most major newspapers was too difficult - as are most Saturday puzzles.
Does anyone know how to solve it?

Personally I needed the X-wing on 9's in the following situation (rows 3 and 7):
Code: |
+-------------+----------------+-------------+
| 78 3 678 | 1246 1267 5 | 14 47 9 |
| 9 2 567 | 146 1367 1367 | 8 3457 16 |
| 4 1 57 | 69 8 39 | 57 2 36 |
+-------------+----------------+-------------+
| 6 45 9 | 7 23 238 | 145 34 18 |
| 3 8 47 | 16 5 16 | 47 9 2 |
| 2 57 1 | 89 39 4 | 6 57 38 |
+-------------+----------------+-------------+
| 58 6 28 | 2589 4 289 | 3 1 7 |
| 57 479 3 | 1256 1267 1267 | 29 8 45 |
| 1 479 2478 | 3 27 278 | 29 6 45 |
+-------------+----------------+-------------+

Look for <5> in R9 and <9> in C5.

Earl,
Load it into the grid and paste it in the forum so that we can have a go. (There is a world outside the US). |

I agree - very easy indeed. I very quickly found 2 squares on 9's - first in cols 2 & 7 - then in rows 3 & 9. There's probably some kind of esoteric Cartesian xyz name for this technique. But even with my neophyte level of Sudokuism - this was a breeze.
By the way - why did we have to wait 7 days for a "very hard". |

I don't have an answer, but it seems to even out. For example, from June 3–June 10 there were four VHs. |

If you look at row seven the "9" has to be in column 4 or 6 so the nine in column five has only one nine at R6, C5. |

In answer to the question as to why there is sometimes a big gap between the VH's, I think you will find that Sam has randomised the sequence of the puzzle difficulty, while maintaining the same 'weighting' for a given period (a month ?) |

Ditto. I solved it a second time in disbelief. |
