Help! I'm new at squigglys and really stuck.

I have solved 12 cells. The hint is an '8' in R1C2. Can someone explain?

If you are new at squigglies, then you should read about the "Law of Leftovers." You can to that here and here. I believe you will find that this makes most squigglies relatively easy to solve.

Apart from that, a specific question such as yours can't be answered without seeing the actual grid you are working on.
