Another interesting puzzle:
Code: | +---+---+---+
|.4.|.9.|.5.|
|2..|...|..9|
|93.|8..|.67|
+---+---+---+
|...|5.7|...|
|8..|3.1|..4|
|...|2.9|...|
+---+---+---+
|49.|..5|.12|
|6..|...|..5|
|.7.|.3.|.9.|
+---+---+---+ |
I found a 2-step solution. But, there are lots of interesting things to explore in this one. |

This looked more intimidating than it turned out to be, what with a large number of polyvalue cells at the start. But it succumbed to a W-Wing, simple coloring and a Type 1 UR. |

I found a ER for digit <4> in Box 8, which eliminates <4> in R9C7,
collapsing the whole puzzle.
The grid after basic steps :
Code: |
+-----------------+-------------+-----------------+
| 17 4 68 | 17 9 36 | 2 5 38 |
| 2 1568 15678 | 147 15 36 | 1348 348 9 |
| 9 3 15 | 8 125 24 | 14 6 7 |
+-----------------+-------------+-----------------+
| 13 126 12469 | 5 48 7 | 3689 238 1368 |
| 8 25 2579 | 3 6 1 | 579 27 4 |
| 1357 156 14567 | 2 48 9 | 35678 378 1368 |
+-----------------+-------------+-----------------+
| 4 9 38 | 6 7 5 | 38 1 2 |
| 6 128 1238 | 9 12 248 | 3478 3478 5 |
| 15 7 1258 | 14 3 248 | 468 9 68 |
+-----------------+-------------+-----------------+

My coloring eliminated that same 4, except I needed the UR for completion. |

Marty,
After eliminating <4> in R9C7, there was a hidden [56] pair in R6
completing the puzzle. |

I'm a paper-and-pencil guy, but I just tried this on Notepad after eliminating that 4 and wound up here. I didn't see anything further so I used the 13 UR, same thing I did with pencil and paper.
Code: | +-----------------+-------------+-----------------+
| 17 4 6 | 17 9 3 | 2 5 8 |
| 2 8 157 | 147 15 6 | 14 3 9 |
| 9 3 15 | 8 125 24 | 14 6 7 |
+-----------------+-------------+-----------------+
| 13 126 1249 | 5 48 7 | 69 28 13 |
| 8 25 279 | 3 6 1 | 59 27 4 |
| 137 56 147 | 2 48 9 | 56 78 13 |
+-----------------+-------------+-----------------+
| 4 9 8 | 6 7 5 | 3 1 2 |
| 6 12 3 | 9 12 8 | 7 4 5 |
| 5 7 12 | 14 3 24 | 8 9 6 |
+-----------------+-------------+-----------------+ |

I didn't notice the ER because my first step was the Skyscraper in C48 that eliminates <4> from both R9C7 and R8C6. After that, I, too, needed the {13} UR.
I also didn't notice the {15} W-Wing. However, after the Skyscraper, that becomes a Type 6 UR with the same result, which is interesting.
There are also various XY Chain options along various paths. |
