Sorry I am new to this message board. I tried posting a pic but it wont let me.
I wanted to know if this was a triple

The row is as follow

5 8 1 (2/4/7/9) (4/7) 3 (4/7/9) (7/2/9) 6. I used the triple 2/4/9 to get rid of the 7 in the block with 4/7. It worked but I dont know if it was because I just guessed right.

Hi Mike and welcome !

Firstly what format is your picture in ? You can post .jpg or .jpeg or png so long as you put [img] [/img] either side of your link to the picture.

If I understand your row correctly, you have 4 squares with more than 1 candidate

(2479) (47) (479) (279)

This is a quad - you have 4 candidates in 4 squares. This means that only those 4 numbers will appear in those 4 squares. It is locked. However you were looking for a triple. This means you need 3 candidates in 3 squares which you don’t have in your example.

Let’s say you had got this instead:

(479) (47) (479) (279)

Then you have a triple (in red)of 4,7,9 This would allow you to eliminate the 7 and 9 from the (279).

However, because you have an extra digit (2) in the first square in your example it’s not a valid triple.

Please feel free to post the whole puzzle if you want and we will try to help.

For doubles, triples and quads the number of candidates must equal the number of squares

(24) (24). eg Double

(247) (27) (47) valid triple
(247) (247) (247) valid triple

If you go back to the main page there is a section called Site Help.

In there you will get help in posting your image.

Another way to post your puzzle is to plug the numbers into draw/play option at the main menu of dailysudoku.com

When you have input all the numbers press “ sweep” which will generate all the candidates.

Then press “ascii”

This will generate a panel which you can cut and paste into your post.

There’s even a Test section where you can test your posts.

Let us know if we can help.
