Another nice one!

I found an xyz on 4,5,9 and an xy on 3,4,6 which broke the puzzle, but I suspect that the first of these wasn't necessary.

Other solutions probably abound; I suspect there's a couple of URs in there too. Smile

I found those same two xyz and xy wings and I doubt that there are many alternatives. I am pretty sure that the first (4,5,9) xyz wing is needed to unlock the 36-34-46 xy-wing .

Just to annoy me, my wife then solved it faster than I'd done without any advanced techniques at all.

I did not see the W-wing (36), so I used an xy-chain with pincers at R2C9, R4C7, eliminating the 8 in R2C7. This was an honest VH.

If it happens, it must be possible ...

- intuition
- enlightenment
- the advanced technique not yet publicly known but already available to select beta-users

P.S. I've heard that for sudoku competitions, the only way to be real fast is in fact guessing. Don't know if it's true, but sounds like a good strategy.

I'm not sure if my grid was identical to this, but the W-Wing on 36 in boxes 4 and 5 knocked out the 3 from r4c6 and solved the puzzle.

nataraj,
one of my coworkers continually beats me to solutions by guessing. but its not really guessing because he takes the number with the least candidates available. I wouldn't say he is even 75 percent accurate when he guesses, but the information he acquires is amazing.

I was only kidding. In the software business, sometimes new products are made available to select customers for "beta-testing". It usually means you get to use the cool new features before everyone else can, in return you have to put up with a lot of aggravation, like the thing not working properly most of the time.

I could also have put "the advanced technique developped by aliens" or similar nonsense. Sorry if I stirred any expectations ...

I was 50/50 on whether you were joking or being serious, but it was funny nonetheless. I went through the whole 360 of denial.

first... nah, he can't be serious, then... maybe he is serious... then... ok, what new technique... then all the way back to... he wasn't serious.
