Now which of the two is easier: the x-wing or the UR?
I think we need both. One after the other. |

So did I.
But it did not solve the puzzle. Only removed 9 in col 1 box 1 or 4.
I still needed the x-wing, and then, once again, the UR 46. This time it was a simple type 1 and solved the puzzle. |

When I did it, the UR takes out <9>, which solves an <8>, which takes out a third cell in C1.
And, the puzzle is done.
If you do not use the UR, there is the X-wing, then what?
Keith
PS: When I solved the puzzle with pencil and paper, I was looking only at C1. But, Sudoku Susser points out a number of other eliminations:
R7C2 - can remove <9> from <159> leaving <15>.
R7C3 - can remove <9> from <1679> leaving <167>.
R3C1 - can remove <9> from <689> leaving <68>.
R5C1 - can remove <9> from <89> leaving <8>.
R9C2 - can remove <9> from <1359> leaving <135>.
R9C3 - can remove <9> from <1369> leaving <136>. |

oops I must have missed that 8 elimination.
I could not solve the puzzle without the UR. I tried to do it with only the x-wing, but no success. then (after the xwing) I used the UR and it solved the puzzle.
Only when I did it again and tried to start with the UR (and there were still 2 nines in c1 box 7) I must have gone astray somewhere.
nice puzzle! Thx, keith! |

Yes, the <9> must be in C1 and in B7.
