Another Vanhegan Fiendish from September 21 to enjoy.
I used several steps to solve it but suspect that many different solutions are possible.

After basics,
Code: |
+--------------------------+--------------------------+--------------------------+
| 26 5 269 | 3 4 69 | 8 7 1 |
| 1 69 3 | 67 78 689 | 4 5 2 |
| 7 8 4 | 12 12 5 | 3 6 9 |
+--------------------------+--------------------------+--------------------------+
| 5 3 26 | 8 126 126 | 7 9 4 |
| 29 7 1 | 4 29 3 | 6 8 5 |
| 69 4 8 | 56 569 7 | 2 1 3 |
+--------------------------+--------------------------+--------------------------+
| 8 2 56 | 9 156 4 | 15 3 7 |
| 3 1 567 | 2567 78 268 | 9 4 68 |
| 4 69 5679 | 1567 3 168 | 15 2 68 |
+--------------------------+--------------------------+--------------------------+
|
I was looking for strong and weak links and came across a w-wing (left diagram): both bi-value cells 56 in r6c4 and r7c3 see the strong link (5) r8c3=r8c4.
Looking in the diagram for "6" (right side), I found that it does not immediately eliminate anything,
BUT
(as I've made a habit in the last few weeks), I entered the useless w-wing as another strong link (in red) into the diagram for "6".
This new strong link gives a handful of eliminations right away:
a) connect to the sl in col 2 and (6)r2c2=r9c2-r7c3=r6c4; r2c4<>6
b) connect to the sl in box 4 and remove three candidates: (6)r4c3=r6c1-r6c4=r7c3; r189c3<>6
That is enough to solve the puzzle.
I have become quite fond of this routine, to look for the possibility of a new strong link when I hit a "useless" m-, w- or xy-wing. Most times, that link only duplicates what is in the diagram already, but sometimes it really pays off...

# 46 eliminations remain

A short chain cracks the puzzle, but it seems unfair. A more interesting approach is the (68) UR in [r89c69] to open up an X-Wing, followed by an ER to crack the puzzle.

My routine sequence started with
the UR<68>,
two w-wings (on <69> and then <56> with a transport) and finally,
a skyscraper on <6>.
I thought the puzzle was a VH level, but was not an obvious one-stepper.

(a) is enough to solve the puzzle. |

Very nice solution Nataraj
I also have been doing more transporting of pincers, even when they directly provide eliminations. In this puzzle I transported the pincer at r6c4 of the useless w-wing <56> to r4c3 using the strong link in box4 thereby getting the identical eliminations you achieved in your second set of eliminations.

I used an x-wing, skyscraper, er and Sue DeCog to bust it without chains. |

Thanks, Ted !
Of course, what I found is just a w-wing with transport. And writing it down as such (or just give the AIC) would have sufficed to describe the solution. As daj95376 pointed out, not all of the eliminations are needed, but then, I found them easily in one step and just used them simultaneously
Even more than in the solution itself I am interested in the various (and sometimes quite ingenious) ways people tackle difficult sudokus. And if a process (or a certain technique) offers effectiveness AND efficiency, this is something I like - as long as it does not become just dull routine. Drawing the little diagrams and looking at them is much easier on my eyes and brain than looking at the full grid - while still providing sufficient challenge.
If only I could find a way to combine both the diagrams (which provide support for coloring, multi-coloring, ER, w-wing, m-wing and combinations thereof) with keith's only partially filled grids (solo and bi-values), which make it very easy to spot xy-wings ...
Problem is, the diagrams visualize mostly strong links, wheras xy- and xyz-wings work with weak links, too. Well, we must leave some challenges for future generations, lol. |
