The cells in a 23 S-Wing are labeled *. The extension is labeled #.
The pivot at r8c3 results in either r3c1=2 or r5c1 =3 and r1c1=4. This => that r3c1<>34.
Extended S-Wing Example Code: |
+-------------------+-------------------+--------------------+
| 34# 9 6 | 7 8 34 | 1 5 2 |
| 1345 1347 8 | 2 159 1349 | 3467 3469 4679 |
| 12-3-45* 1347 235*| 3459 6 1349 | 8 349 479 |
+-------------------+-------------------+--------------------+
| 7 16 4 | 68 3 5 | 9 2 18 |
| 135* 2 35* | 689 4 69 | 56 7 18 |
| 58 68 9 | 1 2 7 | 456 46 3 |
+-------------------+-------------------+--------------------+
| 23489 348 1 | 34569 7 23469 | 2346 3469 4569 |
| 2349 34 23* | 34569 59 8 | 23467 1 45679 |
| 6 5 7 | 349 19 12349 | 234 8 49 |
+-------------------+-------------------+--------------------+ |
The original puzzle is the 8-2-10 tough at sudoku.com.au. I used only basic moves to reach this point in the puzzle.

Bud,
It would be convenient if you post the original puzzle, or, at least, a link to the precise puzzle.

Hi keith,
Here is the original puzzle with no basic moves. I will try to include this with any future posts.

| 6 5 7 | 349 1239 12349 | 234 8 149 |
+----------------------+---------------------+------------------------+ |
I have shown the puzzle after the first advanced move in the diagram below. My second advanced move is also an extended S-Wing with cells labeled *. Here the 59 pivot is r8c5 which results in either r7c1=9 or r2c1=5 and r6c1=8, which => r7c1<>8. The only other advanced move I used to finish the puzzle was a 9 2-string kite.
Code: |
+-------------------+-------------------+--------------------+
| 34 9 6 | 7 8 34 | 1 5 2 |
| 1345* 1347 8 | 2 159* 1349 | 3467 3469 4679 |
| 125 1347 235 | 3459 6 1349 | 8 349 479 |
+-------------------+-------------------+--------------------+
| 7 16 4 | 68 3 5 | 9 2 18 |
| 135 2 35 | 689 4 69 | 56 7 18 |
| 58* 68 9 | 1 2 7 | 456 46 3 |
+-------------------+-------------------+--------------------+
| 234-89* 348 1 | 34569 7 23469 | 2346 3469 4569 |
| 2349* 34 23 | 34569 59* 8 | 23467 1 45679 |
| 6 5 7 | 349 19 12349 | 234 8 49 |
