One step that involves a
Quote:
w-wing 26 with a "different" strong link. The w-wing is in r3c8 and r7c9. The "different" strong link 2 is in col2 which also contains a third occurrence of the digit 2 in r5c2. However, (2)r5c2 - (2)r5c79 = (2)r4c8 - (2=6)r3c8 so the w-wing is valid and deletes the 6 in r1c9 to complete the puzzle. Is this a grouped strong link?

Does anyone have the proper terminology for this condition?

Ted

Ted,
may we know all the cells that contain your original w-wing? then maybe we can go from there

or

are you referring to ONLY the identical bi-value cells {2,6} in r3c8 and r7c9 as a w-wing? without the strong link needed to connect them?
-------

after further examination, I found the NET that you are seeing. others would post this type of NET as follows.

Net on the 2's in column two. present as a Kraken column:

(2)r3c2 - (2=6)r3c8
||
(2)r5c2 - (2)r5c79 = (2)r5c8 - (2=6)r2c8
||
(2)r7c2 - (2=6)r7c9

each of which conclude with eliminating 6 from r1c9

Ted, I don't recall seeing your pattern, so I don't know if it has a name.

If it wasn't for the fin cell (#), you would have a W-Wing w/pincer cells (*) and a strong link (@) in [c2]. I guess it could be called a Kraken W-Wing since the fin cell forces the same elimination as the W-Wing.

Code:
 *--------------------------------------------------------------------*
 | 8      1456   13459  | 15     2      1369   | 1569   7      56     |
 | 2569   7      1259   | 158    68     169    | 12569  4      3      |
 | 2569  @1256   12359  | 4      367    13679  | 12569 *26     8      |
 |----------------------+----------------------+----------------------|
 | 24     3      8      | 6      5      14     | 7      12     9      |
 | 1     #2456   2457   | 3      9      47     | 256    8      2456   |
 | 45679  456    4579   | 18     478    2      | 3      16     456    |
 |----------------------+----------------------+----------------------|
 | 245   @1245   1245   | 7      346    3456   | 8      9     *26     |
 | 3      9      6      | 2      1      8      | 4      5      7      |
 | 2457   8      2457   | 9      46     456    | 26     3      1      |
 *--------------------------------------------------------------------*

As for Norm's Kraken column, it's a forcing chain w/three streams based on the three possibilities for <2> in [c2]. It's not a forcing network because none of the stream links use information passed down (memory) from an earlier elimination.
