XY-Wing <78> - <67> - <68> eliminating 8 in r7c8 solves the puzzle. |

On my first attempt, the puzzle fell apart with simple box line interactions. So I tried again from a different approach and the same thing happened. Have I been twice lucky (or unlucky!) or have others found the same thing? |

I needed more than basics.
Code: |
+-----------+--------------+--------------+
| 39 49 8 | 3467 5 3467 | 67 1 2 |
| 7 6 2 | 1 9 8 | 4 3 5 |
| 13 5 14 | 3467 2 3467 | 9 68 78 |

| 19 2 6 | 789 14 79 | 3 5 48 |
| 5 7 39 | 689 34 269 | 268 468 1 |
+-----------+--------------+--------------+
| 2 349 5 | 49 6 1 | 78 489 3478 |
| 6 349 7 | 2 8 5 | 1 49 34 |
| 8 1 49 | 349 7 349 | 5 2 6 |

is it possible for you to list the exact steps you made? which singles you found one at a time?
maybe by going through it step by step, it will be more clear to the readers of the forum how you made your progression through the puzzle.
that way one of the readers can help pinpoint a move which may or may not have been seen by others in solving the puzzle.
big question to ask, sorry in advance. |

My daily sudoku is a diversion during my morning tea break at work so I may not have enough time to write every step down, but tomorrow morning I will do the puzzle again and watch myself really closely!!! When I find my lucky mistake, I will confess to all. |

m-wing
(8=7)r7c7 - (7)r1c7 = (7-8)r3c9 = (8)r3c8; r7c8 <> 8
I guess those cells contain the xy-wing also. |

I had the same thing happen to me one time. I think I boo-booed.
Below is the grid I got after basics. There are 2 x-wings on 3s, which take out some 3s, but they seem to otherwise do no good.
I had to use the 78-67-68 xy wing to get it done.
Code: |
+------------+--------------+--------------+
| 39 49 8 | 3467 5 3467 | 67 1 2 |
| 7 6 2 | 1 9 8 | 4 3 5 |
| 13 5 14 | 3467 2 3467 | 9 68 78 |
+------------+--------------+--------------+
| 4 8 13 | 5 13 26 | 26 7 9 |
| 19 2 6 | 789 14 79 | 3 5 48 |
| 5 7 39 | 689 34 269 | 268 468 1 |
+------------+--------------+--------------+
| 2 349 5 | 349 6 1 | 78 489 3478 |
| 6 349 7 | 2 8 5 | 1 49 34 |
| 8 1 349 | 349 7 349 | 5 2 6 |
+------------+--------------+--------------+

Another one step solution is the Type 3 UR 26 in r46c67. To prevent the deadly UR, either r6c6=9 or r6c7=8. Both result in r5c6=7 to solve the puzzle.
(9)r6c6 - (9=7)r5c6;
(8)r6c7 - (8)r6c4 = (8-7)r5c4 = (7)r5c6.

I too completed the puzzle without coming across any advanced techniques. Must have made the same lucky mistake. What a coincidence.

Confession time! I did this puzzle again today, laboriously watching my every move and sure enough strayed well into VH territory - XY wing required. Peter, I don't know what we did!
