I think this puzzle from Ruud's "Nightmare" site is very instructive.
Code:
9  .  .  .  7  .  4  .  .
3  .  6  .  .  .  5  .  .
.  4  .  .  .  9  .  .  .
.  .  2  6  .  8  .  .  1
.  .  .  .  4  .  .  .  .
4  .  .  1  .  5  6  .  .
.  .  .  7  .  .  .  2  .
.  .  1  .  .  .  8  .  9
.  .  4  .  6  .  .  .  3

After filling in 20 squares I arrived at a position where two closely related double-implication chains rooted in r9c4 & r5c8 broke the puzzle wide open.

If you haven't tried a "Nightmare" yet this is a good one to start with. dcb
