Both of these are 1-steppers:

Type 1 UR using 45s in r68c13 making r8c1<>45

w-wing using 26s in c23 with strong link 2 in c4 making r2c2 and r5c3<>6

.

Basic steps arrive at:

Code:

+------------+--------------+----------+
| 3   4   7  | 9    268 68* | 1   5 28 |
| 8   256 26 | 2457 1   47  | 3   9 27 |
| 1   25  9  | 3    25  78  | 78  6 4  |
+------------+--------------+----------+
| 7   26  1  | 28   4   9   | 68  3 5  |
| 9   3   26 | 1    28  5   | 678 4 78 |
| 45  8   45 | 67   67  3   | 2   1 9  |
+------------+--------------+----------+
| 2   9   3  | 57   57  1   | 4   8 6  |
| 456 7   45 | 468  3   468 | 9   2 1  |
| 46  1   8  | 46   9   2   | 5   7 3  |
+------------+--------------+----------+

If r1c5 is '8' then r5c9 must be '8'. If r1c9 is '8' than r5c5 must be '8'.

R1c6 and r5c7 cannot be '8'. R1c6 must be '6'.

Ema: Not sure from your logic why R1c6 cannot initially be considered an '8' - but in any event this seems to be a “what if” or “trial and error”solution as opposed to a “technique” (like wings, URs, ERs, colouring, etc.). I guess you could argue that “trail and error” is also a technique but this kind of solution is rarely offered on this Forum.

Ema; simply take it for what it is, an x-wing on 8 in r15c59, eliminating 8 at r1c6 and r5c7.

The logic is simple. In column 6 and column 9, '8' can be in only r1 or r5. If r1c6 were '8', then r5c5 and r5c9 are the only remaining cells that could be '8'.

It was simpler to follow the solution once Kuskey pointed out it is an x-wing. For me that's the whole point of "labelling" techniques.
