This reminds me of an assignment in advanced math which requires 90% arithmetic to complete it.

W-Wing (89) in r4c2 and r5c7, SL 9 in r6, flightless with transport of 8 from r5c7 to r2c9; r2c2<>8.

Code:

+------------+-------------+--------------+
| 89 2   589 | 7   3   6   | 589 4    1   |
| 6  589 1   | 4   59  259 | 7   3    289 |
| 7  3   4   | 8   1   259 | 59  6    29  |
+------------+-------------+--------------+
| 5  89  7   | 6   89  4   | 2   1    3   |
| 2  4   3   | 1   589 59  | 89  7    6   |
| 1  6   89  | 3   2   7   | 4   589  589 |
+------------+-------------+--------------+
| 3  589 589 | 29  7   1   | 6   289  4   |
| 4  1   2   | 59  6   8   | 3   59   7   |
| 89 7   6   | 259 4   3   | 1   2589 589 |
+------------+-------------+--------------+

A kite on 8 originating from BOX 1 in r2c1; r9c9<>8 leads to
A skyscraper on 8 in r26 running from col 9; r4c2<>8 which solves it.

Dan,

8R245 is a "double" Sashimi Swordfish or an X Chain on 8s : r2c9=r2c2-r4c2=r4c5-r5c5=r5c7 => -8r1c7.r6c9

Best regards, JC

"X-chain" is the better name IMO. Had Angus Johnson chosen to define "multi-coloring" to use two or more conjugate chains, an x-chain would today be within SSTS.

 |  89    7     6     | 259   4     3     |  1     2589  589   |
 *-------------------------------------------------------------*

Now, all you need to do is decide if the fish is for <8> or <9> ... or both!

The cells * are W-wing pincers on 9. An XY-wing finishes it off.

Seasons Greetings to all, or as John Lennon once sang,
“’appy Krimble!”

All those remote pair possibilities, there just has to be oddagons. Here’s a quick and easy one using Keith's pattern.

Code:
+------------+-------------+--------------+
|*89 2   589 | 7   3   6   |*89+5 4   1   |
| 6 *89+5 1  | 4  -59  259 | 7   3    289 |
| 7  3   4   | 8   1   259 | 59  6    29  |
+------------+-------------+--------------+
| 5 *89  7   | 6  *89  4   | 2   1    3   |
| 2  4   3   | 1  *89+5 59 |*89  7    6   |
| 1  6   89  | 3   2   7   | 4   589  589 |
+------------+-------------+--------------+
| 3  589 589 | 29  7   1   | 6   289  4   |
| 4  1   2   | 59  6   8   | 3   59   7   |
| 89 7   6   | 259 4   3   | 1   2589 589 |
+------------+-------------+--------------+

(89)oddagon, guardian 5s => r2c5<>5

(5)r1c7-r3c7=(5)r3c6

Or using just the 8s in those cells, with externals guarding against an impossible odd-length conjugate loop: (8)r1c3 = (8)r7c2 ==> r2c2<>8

[edits: added the following]
Furthermore, since the empty rectangle pattern in b1 is a grouped conjugate link, there's actually only one required guardian: (8)r7c2 ==> r24c2<>8

In AIC form: (8)r2c2 - r1c13 = r1c7 - r5c7 = r5c5 - r4c5 = (8)r4c2 ==> r2c2<>8

A second AIC, with the strong and weak inferences reversed, yields r4c2<>8.

Thinking someone might be interested in graphics for the two oddagons above. "Truths" and "links" correspond to "base sets" and "cover sets", respectively.
