How do you find the next digit to place w/o pencil marks?

Well, I stare at the puzzle, and carry the possibilities in my head. These puzzles almost always do not require advanced moves.

In this one, I missed the naked triple 128 in R7 which solves it. What I did see was the placement of 8s in B46, which reveals a W-wing -25 with the strong link 58 in R5.

I see that draw/play does not resolve the triple. You should file a complaint to management.
