Marty,
Where is the 9 in B5 solves 9 in R4C2 and R3C3.
Then, look at C6. Where is the 6 in B2 and then in B7?
Solving R5C3 as 6.
Masochistic, if you will. But, I'd far rather challenge myself to do this with pencil and paper (P&P) without pencil marks (PMs) than use software to help find more complicated patterns.
(And, by that, I mean to include software that simply does your pencil marks.)

I try and do my newspaper's puzzles without PMs but don't always succeed. I lack the ability to visualize the grid in ways that would allow me to solve puzzles like this one.
For example, I see a 12345 in box 5 so it needs a 6789. I can't make any placements based on that so it's onto the next, row, column or box.

I see where you're coming from but don't know that I fully agree. I guess it depends on what one considers to be important Sudoku skills. Determining pencil marks is "grunt work", not part of the logic process needed to solve puzzles.
There's a parallel here to math in school when they let students use a calculator to do arithmetic as part of a more advanced course. The arithmetic is not really part of the skill set required to solve the advanced problems. |

Keith, you're taking those six hour flights again, aren't you? |

No, but I'm in training for Detroit to Cape Town via Amsterdam in August.
For what it's worth, I find that working this hard on the basic skills is very rewarding. Kind of like working on your short game at golf.
