Given the number of posts recently I'm surprised no one has posted on
this one yet......

Er...After Basics:

Play this puzzle online at the Daily Sudoku site

I found:
Quote:
An X wing on 1 opening a 49-8 XYZ wing pivot r6c8 so r6c7=5
Couldn't see a one stepper based on the usual VH wings
but I suspect there are several W wings, chains etc....
but I'm off for another coffee rather than hunting them down.

Found the same as Hugh and had a lot of fun as usual. I see that Hugh's basics are not quite complete, he did not eliminate the 1 from r5c9 that is key to the solution we both found. Like Hugh I believe someone else will come up with a one stepper.

cheers,

JC played a Finned X-Wing without specifying the technique.

I don't know what to call it, but the 58 pairs in r3c9 and r7c3 (acting as pincers) are linked together by the 56 pairs in r5c39 (acting as the pivot), so -8r7c9. It works like an XY wing, but the pivot is a pair of cells instead of a single cell.

Good find. What you have there is a W-Wing. The strong link on 5 in r5 proves that one or the other of r3c9 and r7c3 must be=8.
