If you want, at minimum, I suppose you could call it medium difficulty. |

What puzzle are you referring to, richfa? You don't mean today's VH, do you? If so, you might want to do it again because I had to use the same 3 VH moves that Hugh did (and that was only because I ignored 2 additional VH moves that turned out to not be necessary). |

Above is the opening grid of the Feb 4, rated H. So it appears that you're asking about a different puzzle.

Hi pbreinhart, Your grid looks exactly like the one that Hugh posted after basics except that you have r8c1=4 instead of 2,4. Are you using some on-line method or computer program that's telling you that that move is a hint or something? If so, you can't determine it from basic methods; only from more advanced moves like a chain. For instance, one simple method could be for you to prove by contradiction that if you assumed it's not 4, then it must be 4 as follows (if r8c1<>4 then r7c3=4 so r5c3<>4 so r5c4=4 so r8c4<>4 so r8c1=4). This tells you that r8c1 must be 4 and if you were able to solve the rest of the puzzle using just basics, then this would be a great solution (because you did it only using one advanced step). However, this doesn't solve it - so it's not a great solution and certainly not (as Marty refers to as) the 'path of least resistance'. If you ignore whatever is giving you this 'hint', the next straightforward move (especially considering that all VHs on this site can be solved using only basics, X wings, XY wings, and XYZ wings) would be Hugh's 45-2 XY Wing w/ pivot at r6c6 allowing you to continue with eliminations other than r8c1. |

Hi Marty! Yes, I noticed that! He actually meant Feb 14th. Don. |

Thank you very much for your info. It is true, I miss typed. The puzzle is from Feb 14 not Feb 4. And, I got the idea for the 4 from a hint. Nevertheless, I will try your suggestion and thanks again. |
