Beautiful Marty. You found the XY-Wing that broke it open, flightless though it was. An extension was the key. There were too many 1s, 7s, and 8s on this grid for me to find the magic by going that route.

After basics I was at this stage....

Code:

+-----------+----------+-----------+
| 7  4   3  | 6  9  1  | 8  2   5  |
| 18 2   5  | 78 3  4  | 17 6   9  |
| 9  18  6  | 2  5  78 | 3  17  4  |
+-----------+----------+-----------+
| 6  3   7  | 4  18 2  | 5  9   18 |
| 2  5   8  | 9  17 3  | 6  4   17 |
| 14 19  49 | 5  78 6  | 2  78  3  |
+-----------+----------+-----------+
| 3  78  2  | 1  4  78 | 9  5   6  |
| 5  6   1  | 78 2  9  | 4  3   78 |
| 48 789 49 | 3  6  5  | 17 178 2  |
+-----------+----------+-----------+

By looking for the strong links (a la Keith) I was able to find the upside-down skyscraper on 7 in r2c47, r8c4, and r9c7. This made r8c9<>7 (=8)!
...and the dominoes fell.....

I almost went for a BUG+2, which would also do the trick....

Thanks all....

I'm not sure what an upside-down skyscraper is, but there is a standard skyscraper in r48 resulting in -7r9c7. Looking at the grid again, there is also a standard skyscraper in c47

However, our after-basics grids don't match.

Just noting that this particular skyscraper had the "roof" on the bottom of the columns r8and 9, and the "floor" was at the top of the columns r2. Just trying to be more descriptive for folks trying to see them for a first time, maybe. They lay sideways sometime, as well. All skyscrapers are trapezoids, essentially, and I've seen them referred to as that.

cheers...immp

They are indeed, but I've never seen the term here.

All X-wings are skyscrapers, and are two strong link (Turbot) patterns.
