I really enjoyed finding a one-step solution for this one.
I'm glad Keith told me about Helmut's site.
I enjoy doing his Very Hard/Advanced every day.

Kudos to the 1-steppers. I wasn't able to achieve solvation that way, but after using an XY-Wing 1-89 I arrived here:
Code:

+----------------+--------+-------------+
| 6    1    7    | 8  9 3 | 5   4   2   |
| 25   25   3    | 7  6 4 | 9   8   1   |
| 48   48   9    | 5  2 1 | 6   7   3   |
+----------------+--------+-------------+
| 1258 9    1258 | 3  4 7 | 18  15  6   |
| 458  7    458  | 6  1 9 | 3   2   458 |
| 3    6    14   | 2  5 8 | 14  9   7   |
+----------------+--------+-------------+
| 7    345  145  | 9  8 6 | 2   135 45  |
| 9    248  1248 | 14 3 5 | 7   6   48  |
| 1458 3458 6    | 14 7 2 | 148 135 9   |
+----------------+--------+-------------+

Play this puzzle online at the Daily Sudoku site

I then located a Skyscraper (1) r67c78 resulting in r4c8<>1(=5!) and r9c7<>1.
That took me to the end...thanks for posting the puzzle.

cheers...immp (love those strong links)

Helmut (screen name: Nataraj) was a frequent visitor to this site in the days when we were documenting things like W- and M-wings.

His puzzles are, may I say, more "interesting" than the one-shot XY-wings you often find here.

Do try his "Sudoku Helper". It's quite an interesting tool. First, it will do basics with one click. Also, it will list all possible moves (of the strategies that it knows) for you to select from, if you so wish.

Somewhere on his site he lists the strategies that might be used for each level of difficulty. But, he has lectured me often that he does not have a desired solution path for any puzzle.

One unique thing he does is a "useless" XY-wing with a strong link. That is where the XY-wing has no eliminations, but you can extend one of the pincers with a strong link. It's a very effective tool to know.

Thanks Keith! I'll check it out. I'm a dinosaur though. I still do the puzzles with pencil and paper and unlike you, I have to make pencil marks or I'd never get them solved! Smile (I even use the eraser when I have to!)
