Hi immpy,

I'm not sure if the number 5 can be eliminated, as I know this technique.
The cells wings, for me, are r5c7 and r6c2 which have the number 2 in common and this can be deleted from r5c1.
Do i have to study again?

Ciao Gianni

Hello Gianni,

As I understand it, in any cell(s) that can "see" all 4 of the cells that make up the WXYZ-wing, eliminations can be made. It is not limited to the outer wing cells only. In fact, one could not use ONLY the outer wing cells to make eliminations (in this case it would be r6c789<>2 if any existed). They don't see all 4 cells of the WXYZ-Wing. But maybe I need to study again.

cheers...immp

Hello again,

I did do some studying...there are several different types of these WXYZ-Wings, where extra eliminations may be made depending on where the various candidates are located. It seems in this case that any 2 (if it were to exist) could indeed be eliminated from r6c789, based on the position of 2 in the cells of the WXYZ-Wing. But surely also, the 2 and the 5 are correctly eliminated from r5c1 as this cell sees all four of the wing cells.

It is always good to re-learn a technique and its nuances from time to time, especially if we aren't exposed to it often. Thanks for the push Gianni. I love these WXYZ-Wings of late, they are helping to crush some tough puzzles, and I am searching earnestly for them now.

cheers...immp
