Not a VH technique but helps in general solving to look at the "dark side".

What happens if you say r1c1 = 3 ? Follow Tom's a-b-c-d. You end up with another 3 in r1c8. Not possible. R1c3 can not = 3.

Another contradiction:

If c=5, b=1, a=3, r1c1=4, r1c5=2 leaves r1c4 with absolutely nothing in it at all!

So c must be <7>


(Or you could see it as an ANP <245> in r1)
